Sealed Mario Games Still Command Serious Money
A sealed Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985) holds the all-time record for any video game sold at auction. $2 million. Rally, 2021.
Two weeks ago, a sealed Super Mario Bros. WATA 8.0 sold for $26,108 at Goldin's Pop Culture Elite auction. Not a gem mint copy. An 8.0. And it still pulled five figures.
A sealed 1989 NES Super Mario Bros. CGC 9.8 went for $57,340 in the same window.
The retro gaming collectibles market crossed $4 billion in 2026 and is projected to hit $8.5 billion by 2033. Mario is the single most recognizable character in the medium. Every anniversary, every movie, every cultural moment sends attention back to the original games. And attention drives price action.
The Galaxy Movie Effect
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens April 1. Chris Pratt returns as Mario. Brie Larson joins as Rosalina. Jack Black is back as Bowser. It's projected to open above $150 million.
The first Mario movie in 2023 did $1.36 billion worldwide. If the sequel performs anywhere near that level, every Mario collectible gets another wave of mainstream attention.
That includes the sealed games, the amiibo, the LEGO sets, and anything vintage with a Mario logo on it. Movie tie-in collectibles don't always hold long-term value. But the underlying catalog of vintage Mario items benefits every time the character trends.

The Bottom Line
Mario turned 40 and Nintendo is treating it like a full-scale campaign. The eShop sale, the GameStop world record attempt, the movie in three weeks, new amiibo, a $180 LEGO kart, and a Lunchables tie-in that might put a Switch 2 in your kid's lunch box.
If you own anything Mario, this is the year it gets attention. If you're starting a collection, the game deals have never been cheaper and the vintage market keeps proving that sealed Mario inventory only gets more expensive with time.
